A Tribute to Goody Thomas
by Joaane Warren and Don Babcock
ACBS has lost a good friend and long-time member
with the recent passing of Goodwin (Goody) Thomas on Thursday, February 19,
2004. Goody was a very special guy – the type of person who charmed you and
made you remember just how wonderful life really is. He was a loveable guy
who followed his passions in life with an enthusiasm that kept him young and
dynamic even in the latter stages of his illness. These passions included
his wife Nancy, their three children (Nancy Jr., Craig, and Goody Jr.) his
beloved Clemson University football team, his church and in the past few
years, ACBS. His friends will not be able to see a college football game
without re membering
him, or the two dollar bills overprinted with Clemson Tiger paws that Goody
always distributed; nor will they go on a river trip, attend boat shows or
annual meetings without missing his southern hospitality and positive
energy.
Though Goody spent most of his life in Rock Hill, South
Carolina, working as an engineer, he had good friends all over the United
States and in Canada. Following retirement He and Nancy met many of these
friends through their active involvement with ACBS activities. In his late
70’s, Goody was invited to join the International Board of ACBS as a
Director. During his 3-year term he took a stagnant Safety Committee to the
forefront of ACBS priorities. His energy was contagious.
With spring arriving and another boating season in the offing, I think that
Goody would like to remind us of the old saying, “God does not subtract from
man’s allotted time on earth, those days spent boating.”
