By Brian Fogarty, member of the Indian Lake Chapter.
I have been boating in Indian Lake in NW Ohio since I was an infant. When I was ten weeks old my parents took me in our 1968 Larson. I slept in a Kirby Sweeper box in the front of the boat.
In 2005, a fellow member of the Indian Lake ACBS Chapter, Steve Hale, offered to sell me his late father’s 1955 Wolverine 14′ Deluxe with the original Evinrude 25 Big Twin Electric engine. The Wolverine had been stored inside for many years, but was still in excellent shape. My dad and I sanded the hull and applied three coats of Captain’s Varnish, changed the spark plugs, and took it to Indian Lake where it started right up. The boat is kept on a covered lift and is used every weekend.
During the thirteen years I have owned “Brian’s Weigh”, I have shown it at antique/classic boat shows where it has won top awards including Hessel, Michigan, Traverse City, Michigan, Akron, Ohio Portage Lakes and most recently Boat the Blue at Port Huron, Michigan where it earned a Platinum Award.
At the age of 46, I am a member of the younger generation whom ACBS wants to attract. I currently serve as vice-president of the Indian Lake ACBS Chapter, webmaster of the chapter website (www.indianlakeacbs.com), and single-handedly developed an extensive website for Wagemaker Boats (www.wagemakerwolverineboats.com) which is a marque club in the ACBS Directory.
I feel it is so important to preserve the history of such an iconic name in boating dating back to 1931. I encourage anyone who has questions or needs information on Wagemaker Boats to contact me on my website. I have made so many friends through the site.
I hope to see more of my Wagemaker Boat friends at future boat shows.
