ACBS Education Committee Report
Neil Satterly – Chair ACBS Education
Formal instruction for restoring your runabout is coming and you have an opportunity to participate with early enrollment.
Earlier this month the ACBS formally partnered with the International Yacht Restoration School of Technology & Trades (IYRS) in Newport, Rhode Island for a new pilot program at the school designed for runabout restoration. IYRS has been teaching wood hull design and construction since 1993 but this program will be targeted to preservation and restoration of our runabout boats. Our very own ACBS board member, Bjorn Bakken is taking the position of lead instructor for the program which will follow the IYRS school year beginning in September and concluding in June.
Enrollment to the public is just being announced and will be limited to only six students so if you or someone you know is interested, don’t wait. Learn more here. https://www.iyrs.edu/programs-of-study/runabout-class
The first and so far, the last comprehensive resource for learning to restore wooden runabouts was the 2003 publication of How to Restore Your Wooden Runabout written by Don Danenberg. The book sold out long ago and sources tell us that it will not be reprinted. If you’re fortunate to own a copy, it remains a valued resource. If you don’t own a copy, you will be able to learn about restoration with a video series that will follow the course being taught at IYRS, very similar to the chapters of the Danenberg book. Information will be updated as videos are produced and made available.
In the meantime, there other videos are available now. ACBS Members can access roughly 125 resource videos covering several topics. Find the ACBS Video Library in your ACBS member portal. On the far left of the menu bar click on the Resources tab dropdown and select Videos. Credit for many of these videos goes to ACBS chapters for conducting excellent workshops covering a variety of restoration topics for members with many being recorded for reference.
Follow the Weekly Web Watch and the ACBS Rudder as information is updated.
