A Gar Wood for every man

The Don Spring Gar Wood story…Don has always loved and worked on wooden boats. He wanted to be a Gar Wood owner, but knew he could not afford one. 13 Years ago, he found an almost dead Gar Wood in a field. All of her decks were punky. The bibs shot and mushrooms were growing out of her everywhere. He traded a set of gaskets for the cadaver. He has done all the work including the engine rebuild himself. He arrived at the ACBS International Boat Show on Saturday. His girl, Portabella, is named after the mushrooms growing out of when he found her. She was not entered in the show and was not judged-sort of. Those of us who knew she was coming waited impatiently. When she arrived, we judged her. We think she is “every-man'” Gar Wood.
