On the tranquil shores of Gull Lake, Minnesota, Glacier Lakes member Jane Larson presented a transformative seminar designed just for women. “Honey, I’ve Got This!” left a lasting impact, equipping women with the knowledge and confidence needed to take command of classic boats in any situation.

Empowering Women in Boating

Empowering women to step into more active roles within the classic boating community, Jane, a seasoned boater and advocate for women’s leadership on the water, created an environment that expanded boating skills and encouraged embracing the challenges and joys of classic boating with confidence.

Expecting the Unexpected

One of the key segments of the seminar, “Expecting the Unexpected,” provided participants with invaluable insights into the essentials every boater should have on hand: Personal flotation devices (PFDs) that meet safety regulations, fire extinguishers and other critical safety equipment that ensures readiness for short outings and day-long adventures. Preparedness is the foundation of safe boating and the right gear is imperative to handle emergencies.

Suddenly Youre in Charge

The ability to take control of a boat in the event of a skipper’s medical emergency is critical so Larson instructed the essentials for stopping and starting a boat so that participants could take over smoothly if needed and how to hail for help by radio communication or other means so that assistance can be summoned quickly when every second counts.

Being a Good Crew Member

The seminar concluded with a hands-on session titled “Being a Good Crew Member,” where participants practiced essential crew skills. Under Larson’s guidance, the women mastered cleat tying, line tossing, and line coiling—fundamental techniques that every boater should know. This practical, interactive session was designed to instill confidence and competence, enabling participants to contribute as effective crew members on any boat.

A Lasting Impact

As the seminar drew to a close, each participant felt a palpable sense of accomplishment and reassurance that she could handle any situation that might arise. “Honey, I’ve Got This” was more than just a learning experience; it was a powerful step toward inclusivity, empowerment and was an opportunity to enjoy more than just the beautiful boats on display at the 2024 Vintage Boat Week but to enjoy confidence that will resonate each and every time they step onto a boat, reminding them that, indeed, theyve got this.

  1. I would have liked to attend this, but we took advantage of cruising opportunities that day as we live in Traverse City, Michigan.. I hope this is offered again in the future.
