Peter Stephen’s March 2016 message:
Only another week and the Sunnyland Chapter Tavares Boat Show will be here! Debbie and I will be looking forward to seeing many friends, new and old, at the show. The weather forecast looks good at this time and it will be great to be outside and away from all the political news & ads on TV!
I’ve mentioned before what a great job Sunnyland does with their boat shows. They also do a great job with their SCAMPY youth programs. Many chapters have youth oriented or community based programs that not only showcase our hobby but give back to our community.
I’d like to highlight another chapter this month that has done an exemplary job giving back to their community. Our local paper in Clayton NY is the Thousand Island Sun, published weekly since 1901, and is probably one of the few newspapers in the country that is still printed on the old fashioned extra wide paper!
The Thousand Island Chapter was highlighted in the newspaper for their winter meeting. This chapter held their 38th Annual Vintage Boat Show this past year. At their winter meeting, they distributed $3,500 to local recipients including the local hospital, historical society, our good friends at the Antique Boat Museum and the Youth Boat Builders program in Gananoque, Canada! Great job! Let me know about the good work you or your chapter have done so I can mention it in this newsletter.
The Terbrueggan Photo Gallery is now available in the Member’s section of the ACBS website. It represents over 400 boats and 22,000 photographs of many collectible boats that Mr. Terbrueggan surveyed or worked on during his career. Through his generosity, these photographs will assist restorers for many years!
Mike Flood of the Michigan Chapter recently contacted me with a great suggestion along the lines of Mr Terbrueggan gallery. Mike suggested that if owners would scan their manuals, catalogs and brochures, it could become a great resource for our members. I agree! I have accumulated a number of original owner manuals and sales brochures for my 1927 Chris Craft Cadet. When I can get to my storage facility and retrieve my “stuff”, I’ll post it on the member’s side of the website. Anyone want to join Mike and me in contributing material? Thanks Mike for a great suggestion. Please send your scanned documents to hqs@acbs.org . I’ll announce later when that portion of the website is up and running.
Speaking of the ACBS website, please consider sending photos and brief write-ups of your favorite boat picture or boating event. Please go here:https://acbs.org/news-events/photo-gallery/ Share your love and enjoyment of family and classic boating with the rest of the ACBS family! The way we will grow our hobby is by sharing our pictures and experiences!
Last, planning is well underway with the No. California/Lake Tahoe chapter for the 2016 Annual Meeting and Boat Show. This is going to be a special event so start planning to join us in September!
See you on the docks or on the water!
Peter Stephens
