ACBS is proud to support the future of boat building and restoration with scholarships at six accredited boat building and restorations schools. The fall semester is just getting underway and Marine Trades Institute is just one school excited to welcome their new cohort of students.

The Marine Trades Institute (MTI) is thrilled to announce the arrival of its newest cohort of students, ready to launch their careers in the thriving marine industry. In celebration of 906 Day, MTI is welcoming these future marine professionals to the heart of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, a region known for its stunning natural beauty and a proud, tight-knit community.

Hailing from across the country, these students are beginning an immersive orientation designed to introduce them to the campus, their programs, and the community that will be their home for the next year. While their studies will focus on the fundamentals of marine mechanics or boat building, their welcome week is all about discovering the hidden gems of the 906.

“Our training is almost entirely hands-on, so having access to the water is vital,” says Dr. Brody Waybrant. “Students learn how to dock a boat and will work on building or repairing boats they’ll be able to take out on the water for testing. There’s no place on earth like the Les Cheneaux Islands, so it’s the perfect place to instill a love of the water.”

To foster a sense of community, MTI has organized a series of “UP-style” welcome events:

  • Tuesday, September 2: A hike to Narnia with Dr. Waybrant.
  • Wednesday, September 3: A tour of the Cedarville Public Library with Jane French
  • Thursday, September 4: An MTI campus game night.
  • Friday, September 5: A friendly kickball game at the Township Park.

The Marine Trades Institute also supports UP student training through a variety of scholarships and sponsorships. For more information about the Marine Trades Institute, its programs, and how to get involved please visit marinetrades.edu.
