By David Quirsfeld, Glacier Lakes Chapter
This Thompson Sea Lancer had sat idly in a garage since 1984 until I rescued it from an estate sale in 2021. Unfortunately, the 1980s vintage 80hp Mercury outboard was sold before I learned of the Chicago area sale. With no dry rot to speak of, its overall good condition and rock-bottom price, I deemed the boat to be a good choice for a restoration project.
After preparing it for travel, we trailered the Thompson to its new home in Door County, Wisconsin, where it will someday soon navigate the waters near its birthplace across Green Bay in Peshtigo, Wisconsin.
Work was begun in August 2021 stripping the hull’s original paint. With that now completed, I will be moving on this summer to the deck and hopefully the bottom if I can find a facility to lift it off the trailer.
Updates to follow as work progresses. All suggestions and comments from Thompson owners and ACBS restorers in general invited by davidquirsfeld@yahoo.com. Look for the ’64 Thompson at the Glacier Lakes chapter shows in Sturgeon Bay and Sister Bay this summer.
Just bought a Lyman 1950 a 15 footer.!? Did u use heat or chemical stripper? Also need to replace some planking if u know a good source. Thanks Walter in Maine
Hi Walter, I’ve been using a heat gun for the hull and bottom since they will be painted and don’t have to worry about the burn marks. Not sure yet about the decking. Maybe I can use a lower heat setting and just take it slow.
