By Jeff and Diane Waco, Rocky Mountain Classics Chapter
A lot has been written about Esmeralda, but very little about her origin story—how she came to join the Rocky Mountain Classics and earn the rare distinction of honorary member of ACBS.
Like many great stories, it all began somewhere unexpected: Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. While browsing a consignment store, longtime Rocky Mountain Classics members Mike and Vickie stumbled upon something… unusual. Mike, known for his keen eye for beauty (especially the nautical kind), was immediately captivated by a certain mermaid mannequin. One look, and he was hooked—line, sinker, and all.
A brief conversation later (and perhaps a raised eyebrow or two), Esmeralda was purchased and shipped home, beginning her new life in Colorado. For years, she was a beloved member of the family and a regular at Rocky Mountain Classics boat shows. Her official role? Holding a sign directing attendees to the in-water display. Her unofficial role? Stealing the show.
Esmeralda relished the attention—especially when dressed to the nines—and greeted admirers with her signature, ever-present smile. But as time went on, life got busier. With Mike and Vickie traveling more, Esmeralda found herself receiving less of the attention she so clearly deserved. And while she rarely complained, she did have her ways of expressing displeasure. A flick of that beautiful tail—well, let’s just say you didn’t want to be within range.
Enter Jeff and Diane.
Recognizing Esmeralda’s need for a more attentive home, Mike and Vickie entrusted her to Diane Waco, who graciously accepted the responsibility. It didn’t take long for Esmeralda to settle in. She resumed her appearances at boat shows, soaking up compliments as if they were sunshine. At home, she enjoyed a lifestyle befitting her status: her very own room, complete with a curated library of classic wooden boat literature dating back to the early 1900s. On warm days, she could be found on the patio, her exquisite tail glistening in the sun, scales sparkling like jewels.
In short, Esmeralda was happy again.
And while we may never know exactly what she’s thinking, one thing is certain: she’s the only member who’s been admired by everyone, photographed constantly… and still hasn’t had to pay annual dues!
