Each October in South Carolina, Georgetown’s historic waterfront comes alive with sawdust, sea spray, and stories. The Georgetown Wooden Boat Show, now in its 36th year, is more than just a festival—it’s a living showcase of craftsmanship, community, and coastal heritage.

On October 18th and 19th, Front Street and the Harborwalk will once again be lined with wooden boats of every shape and style, from handcrafted canoes and skiffs to restored sailboats and vintage powerboats.

Around 100 boats will be on display both on land and in the water, each one representing countless hours of dedication and a unique story. For many visitors, the boat exhibits are the true heart of the show: a chance to step close, talk with builders and owners, and see firsthand the artistry that goes into keeping maritime traditions alive.

The Georgetown Wooden Boat Show is known not only for its impressive lineup of wooden craft, but also for the way it celebrates and thanks its exhibitors. Each participant is welcomed into the community with an evening reception, while judges recognize outstanding boats in multiple categories. Exhibitors often describe the weekend as a chance to connect with fellow enthusiasts, share knowledge, and inspire the next generation of boatbuilders and sailors.

Beyond the exhibits, the weekend offers something for everyone. Saturday’s wooden boatbuilding competition is a crowd favorite, where teams race the clock—and each other—to build seaworthy boats from scratch, then launch them dramatically into the Sampit River. Sunday’s corrugated cardboard boat race delivers a more lighthearted spectacle, as laughter and friendly chaos fill the waterfront. Families will find plenty to enjoy as well, with kids’ model boatbuilding, knot tying, food and craft vendors, live music, and maritime-themed exhibits. The Nauti Dog Parade on Sunday adds a playful flair, with four-legged “sailors” dressed in creative costumes.

Behind it all, the show serves a greater purpose. Though free for all to attend, the Georgetown Wooden Boat Show is the primary fundraiser for the South Carolina Maritime Museum. Proceeds support the museum’s exhibits, youth sailing and boatbuilding programs, educational outreach, and the preservation of South Carolina’s rich maritime history.

The Wooden Boat Show is a reflection of the community that creates it—hardworking, welcoming, and full of heart. For exhibitors, it’s a place to showcase their passion. For visitors, it’s an unforgettable celebration of boats, history, and the coastal spirit. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor, a craftsman, or simply someone who loves a day by the water, Georgetown’s Wooden Boat Show is a tradition worth experiencing—and a story you’ll want to be part of.
