The Hudson River Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society is one of the earliest chapters of the ACBS and has deep roots in the Hudson River’s boating community. Our chapter is geographically different, with our members stretching along the river’s length from New York City to Albany, NY. Historically, the Hudson River Chapter has enjoyed a long-term relationship with the Hudson River Maritime Museum in Kingston, NY. This partnership has fostered a strong connection to the region’s nautical history.
Originally, along with runabouts, our members owned many skiffs, cruisers, and sailboats, partly due to the inherent challenges associated with boating on the mighty Hudson River. Cruisers such as Elco, Chris Craft, Lyman, Wheeler, Matthews, from 24 to 40 feet, docked at our shows. Unlike chapters that focused on award-winning “show” boats, the Hudson River Chapter has always been proud of our “user” boats—vessels our members actively used and appreciated for their functionality as much as their polished appearance.
Despite its initial robust membership of over fifty individuals, we have experienced a decline in numbers in recent years; a situation all too familiar to ACBS. In response to changing times and membership dynamics, we are moving toward a greater emphasis on social events than boat shows. These gatherings provide opportunities for members to connect, share their passion for antique and classic boats, and enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded enthusiasts. As the ACBS celebrates this significant milestone, the Hudson River Chapter hopes to honor our legacy while adapting to the evolving landscape of boating on the Hudson River.
